A taster course of a different kind will be held in Belfast at the end of the month. Organised by ‘Carraig’ a newly established group the course will give introductions to the other five Celtic languages in one day. Therefore, on Saturday 28th September 20 learners will gather in ‘An Lon Dubh’ café (Raidió Fáilte, Falls Road) to spend a day learning basic greetings and phrases in Scots Gaelic, Manx, Welsh, Cornish and Breton, with an hour for each language.
Among the tutors for this first in the Celtic world is a young Cornish woman and fluent Cornish speaker who lives in Belfast, Merryn Davies-Deacon, as well as Yann Charlez Caudal, a Breton who is also spending time in the city. The other three languages will be taught by Irish tutors with Dr. Art Hughes introducing learners to Manx and Maureen Hurndell doing likewise with Welsh.
‘Carraig’ – a Belfast inter-Celtic discussion group – was set up to develop co-operation and links between the Celtic countries and to increase awareness of the cultures, languages, literatures and more of the greater Celtic world. Other events on language, music and literature are planned for the future.
If you would like to take part in the ‘Taster course’ (there is a limit of 20 participants for this course) or if you would like more information on Carraig, send an email to carraigcelt@gmail.com or visit the Carraig page on Facebook.
