News from Mannin Branch Celtic League:

The ‘wise man from the North’ Professor Curran should have reported by now to ‘the great men of COMIN’ and they will be deliberating over what this means to you.

Well there will be tax implications as the transition to a cleaner planet – if it can be achieved in time – will not be cleap. So who is going to pick up the bill? Will it be the business community? I see, despite it being a contradiction in terms, that the Chamber of Commerce are ‘friends’ of the biosphere so have they been urging Professor Curran to tax their members – I doubt it. Will it be the Isle of Mans potentially damaging global trade – again I doubt it. Will it be you ‘the hoi polloi’ – very likely yes.

Curran displayed his complex interpretative skills when asked to comment on potential fracking recently so what other areas are also ‘no go’ in the great scheme of things.

Let’s take the Islands aircraft register noted these days for its corporate jet business a growing and lucrative trade which allows ‘the great and good’ to not only destroy the planet but get a VAT rebate into the bargain. Will – I wonder – Curran have focused on this. Yes, I know strictly speaking it’s not ‘our carbon footprint’ but it’s the one we are exporting to the rest of the world as this article in the UK media indicates:

So the results of Curran will be interesting and I will be looking to see what he’s missed of his hit list as much as what he recommends. There is no doubt that when it comes to climate change and combating it the old adage ‘there’s no gain without pain’ will apply. Personally if it makes the future more secure for our children I’m prepared to sustain a fair share of that ‘pain’.

However we need to ensure that the burden does not fall disproportionately on those least able to bear it and that while many people endure the ‘pain’ a coterie of landowners and businesses around COMIN and the Chamber don’t slip the lead and enjoy ‘gain’ at our expense!
