NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

Thirteen people are to be charged with false imprisonment, while 14 others will be charged with violent disorder or criminal damage. This follows the anti-water charge demonstrations on 15 November 2014 in Jobstown, Ireland. During the protest Labour leader Joan Burton and Karen O’Connell were trapped in a car for over two hours. It has been reported by RTÉ News (link)

https://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0911/727274-jobstown-gardai/ ‘

that the process of charging the 27 people by summons has already begun and those summonses to appear in court are expected to be issued by next week and then served.’

Amongst those facing charges are sitting TD (Teachtaí Dála) member of member of Dáil Éireann (Assembly of Ireland) Paul Murphy and two Anti-Austerity Alliance councillors, Kieran Mahon and Mick Murphy. This is a clear attack on the right to protest and a crude attempt to try and derail the successful anti-water charge movement. Few are surprised by the charges after months of leaks to the Irish media pointed to political involvement. This, nevertheless, is a worrying attempt at stifling the right to protest and has to be fought all the way.
