NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE
Thirteen people are to be charged with false imprisonment, while 14 others will be charged with violent disorder or criminal damage. This follows the anti-water charge demonstrations on 15 November 2014 in Jobstown, Ireland. During the protest Labour leader Joan Burton and Karen O’Connell were trapped in a car for over two hours. Amongst those facing charges are sitting TD (Teachtaí Dála) member of member of Dáil Éireann (Assembly of Ireland) Paul Murphy and two Anti-Austerity Alliance councillors, Kieran Mahon and Mick Murphy. This is a clear attack on the right to protest and a crude attempt to try and derail the successful anti-water charge movement. Few are surprised by the charges after months of leaks to the Irish media pointed to political involvement. This, nevertheless, is a worrying attempt at stifling the right to protest and has to be fought all the way.
