NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE
If there was a ‘Nobel Prize for idiotic ideas’ it would have to be shared jointly this year by the Manx Utility Authority and the Isle of Man Department of Infrastructure.
There plan to drain a natural lagoon at the Ayres SSI which will in all probability be cleared naturally at the next confluence of high tides and storm winds is laughable especially when you hear the reason for this wasted effort is a bad smell!
Bird life supporters have rightly condemned the move and one wonders why there was not consultation with such bodies before such a move was mooted by the MUA (radio news link):

It is to be hoped that this intervention is successful in derailing this MUA crackpot idea and in future any moves by government agencies in relation to the Ayres SSI or other sensitive Island habitat are talked through with environmental groups first.
Unfortunately the MUA (or more accurately its predecessor the MEA) has form on wasting our money. The Department of Infrastructure also has form (the toxic sludge affair) on paying little heed to environmental considerations.
Perhaps both bodies could better utilise their time sorting that fractured sewer outfall at Peel out, before there’s a real stink!
