SKELLIGS BEING TURNED INTO ‘DISNEYESQUE THEME PARK’ SAY AN TAISCE
An Taisce (The National Trust for Ireland) has expressed concern at what it calls the rebranding as ‘Skellig Michael’ of the Kerry Coast as a ‘Disneyesque theme site’.
The Skellig Islands are a vtally important site for bird and marine life and have UNESCO world heritage status.
However the Island of Skellig Michael was used for filming of the Star Wars films despite opposition and since that time has attracted a cult visitor attraction. Visitors number are meant to to strictly capped but An Taisce says numbers visiting the Island have exceeded permitted levels.
