It’s the National Illiam Dhone commemoration and as usual Dhone’s remembrance causes accolades, abuse and apathy. The day itself is as much a focus on his memory as on contemporary events. Today the focus will be on the environment in other years it’s been critical of government policy or when Ministers have spoken at the hill has been less caustic. It’s a bringing together of a diverse strand of opinions, not just in terms of nationalism but in terms of cultural and political life generally.
Sometimes Dhone and his times become obscure or the perspective is distorted. However the 2018 commemoration at which Dr John Callow looked at the history of the time in the context of today was perhaps one of the clearer expressions of William Christian, his times and today and what it all means.
